What kind of Physician is a Dermatologist?

Dermatologists diagnose and treat all aspects of healthy and diseased skin in adults and children, including conditions such as skin cancer, melanomas, moles, dermatitis, acne, and sexually transmitted diseases. Dermatologists also manage cosmetic disorders of the skin, including hair loss, scars, and the skin changes associated with aging.1

What special training is required for a doctor to become a Dermotologist?

On completion of medical school, a physician who wants to be Board Certified as a dermatologist is required to complete one year of internship, 4 years of internal medicine residency, and 3 years as a dermatology resident. He or she must then become certified by the American Board of Dermatology, passing an examination that is both written and oral.2

What kind of treatment does a Dermatologist?

A dermatologist treats skin disorders, including rashes, acne, herpes, and sexually transmitted diseases. In addition, a dermatologist is trained to diagnose and treat skin cancers.

Routinely, dermatologists also specialize in anti-aging and cosmetic procedures to enhance and beautify the skin, including facials, laser skin treatments, and application of fillers beneath the skin to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, dark spots, and scars.
