Recalled: CooperVision Avaira Toric and Sphere Soft Contact Lenses

What are CooperVision AVAIRA Toric and Sphere Soft Contact Lenses?

These soft contact lenses were prescribed for the correction of myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness) with astigmatism. The lenses are indicated for patients who may or may not have had their natural lens of their eye altered through Lasik or similar surgery. They are not recommended for patients who have had previous eye diseases.1

The AVAIRA Soft Contact Lens is indicated for single-use disposable wear and daily wear.

What are the side effects reported for wearers of this lens?

Contact wearers have reported initially experiencing hazy vision. This will usually subside if the lens is removed immediately. Continued use of the lens can lead to severe eye pain, and eye injuries resulting permanent vision loss.2

It was discovered that (silicone oil) was found on Avaira Sphere contact lenses that apparently occurred in a faulty manufacturing process.3

These lenses were distributed November 1, 2010 through August 3, 2011.4

What should I do if I have received recalled lenses?

Remove the lenses, and contact your physician.

The FDA has issued a Class 1 Recall for this product. Class 1 recalls are the most severe type of recall and involve conditions in which there is a chance that use of these products will cause unfavorable health outcomes.5

CooperVision has provided a website for customers to use to find out if your lenses are part of the recall. Simply type in your lot number to find out immediately if your lenses are included at: http://coopervision.com/node/551. If you have experienced any of the above symptoms but do not find your lot number included in the recall, you should still keep your lenses, and packaging, as the lot numbers involved in the recall, may be expanded over time.
