Charles D. Rosen, MD

Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery
University of California , Irvine , School of Medicine

Clinical Specialty: Spinal surgery

Clinical Interests:
Dr. Rosen is a Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Univ. of California, Irvine, School of Medicine, and specializes in spinal disorders having completed advanced fellowship training in spinal surgery and rehabilitation in 1989. He founded the University of California, Irvine, Spine Center. Dr. Rosen has been in practice for 21 years diagnosing and performing surgery on spinal disorders His research and writings are in the field of ethics and in the area of biomechanics of the spine. He is a member of the Conference Advisory Board of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and is Associate Editor of the Journal of Ethics in Biology, Engineering and Medicine. He testified before the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging advocating passage of the Physician Payment Sunshine Act sponsored by Senators Grassley (R-IA) and Kohl (D-WI) in February 2008.

Research Interests:
His interest in ethics and industry’s financial influence in the practice of medicine has led him to found this Association as well as to write about his research in this area. Additionally, his research currently is also developing a more accurate model of spinal biomechanics. This has arisen out of his nationally recognized expertise in evaluating the failure of artificial lumbar disc replacements, and in their treatment. After reviewing numerous failed disc replacements, he believes the current disc replacements being implanted all have an inherent design flaw. This flaw is in the disc design being based on an erroneous model of spinal motion.

Background:
Dr. Rosen received his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and his medical doctorate degree from the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery internship at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, and his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Hospital for Joint Diseases Orthopaedic Institute in New York City. He completed fellowship training in Spine Surgery and Rehabilitation at Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center in Downey, California.

He currently serves as Clinical Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California, Irvine. He is board certified, and re-certified, by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, an active member of the North American Spine Society, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
